Cultural Dimensions of Tourism & Hospitality Assignment -

This assessment requires you to:

  • consider cultural dynamics in New Zealand and one other destination.
  • examine the nature of cultural exchange between hosts and guests from different cultures
  • analyse possible cultural conflict in tourism and hospitality, how it may come about, and how it can be minimised.

A useful tool for understanding differences in cultures across the world is the one developed by Prof Geert Hofstede. He is one of the most cited authors regarding the world-wide classification of cultures.

Task:

1. Select New Zealand and one other 'collective' society. Research fully your 2 chosen countries on the web page (as well as other appropriate sources) and complete the following tasks:

a. In report-style format, describe what similarities and/or differences exist between the 2 countries in relation to Hofstede's five cultural dimensions.

b. Explain how identified differences may lead to misunderstanding &/or conflict in a business setting.

c. Imagine you are hosting an important business meeting where your chosen cultures (i.e. New Zealand and one other) are in attendance. Identify five cultural strategies you would apply and explain how each will ensure cultural communication is effective in this meeting.

2. In your own words, describe what is meant by the concept 'manaakitanga' and how it impacts on hospitality in New Zealand.
