Critically analyse the effectiveness of leadership

Assessment Task - Critical Analysis Case Study Report

Critically analyse the effectiveness of leadership portrayed in the movie you have selected using the framework for assessing leadership effectiveness on p. 21 of the textbook (DuBrin, 2013) to structure your analysis.

Details of the Task:

Please note that in preparing your report you will need to draw upon additional reading you have done into the research on the aspects of leadership you consider in your report. You are expected to identify specific issues by viewing the movie, in order to develop and justify leadership effectiveness of the leader chosen, through synthesis and careful critical reflection. You will need to properly cite your sources and provide a reference list. Reports which draw solely or almost exclusively on the textbook will be unlikely to receive a higher mark than a low Pass on this assessment task.

The films are based on real-life people and events. The filmmakers have at times taken liberties with historical accuracies, but for purposes of this report and our consideration of leadership effectiveness, this is not an important issue. If you wish to find further information about the people and/or circumstances involved in the film you have selected, there are other sources you can consult, including books (non-fiction), journal articles, and credible internet sources. It is not, however, expected that you will do further research into the person or circumstances involved in the film you select as this assignment is not about history - but this is a critical analysis report about leadership.

Films: Select any one of the following three films as the basis for your report:
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (Chadwick2013)
The Iron Lady (Lloyd, 2011)
Thirteen Days (Donaldson, 2000)

Format: The format for this assignment is a report. A guide such as Summers and Smith (2010) can assist you with useful information on the preparation of a report. Your report will need to include an assignment online cover sheet; a title page; an executive summary; table of contents; introduction; the body or main part of the report presenting your analysis and discussion; a conclusion and list of references and bibliography.

Referencing - Harvard (In-text): References should be presented in accordance with the Harvard (in-text) style for citations and bibliography entries

Research: You are required to explore the relevant research-based literature concerning the aspects of leadership you address in your report and to use this research in a critical manner to evaluate the effectiveness of leadership in the film you have chosen. It is expected that you will cite and use appropriately a minimum of 15 research-based sources (refereed/peer reviewed journal articles) related to leadership and leadership theories.

There is a large body of research on various aspects of leadership. Consulting and effectively utilizing the research-based literature is an essential component of this assignment.

Focus of report: This report is designed to explore issues which affect leadership effectiveness. It is not a biographical report per se nor a film critique or a history report. In other words, while you may find it useful to do some reading about the people and situations featured in the film to give yourself some additional background, it is not intended that your report offer, except as relevant to consideration of leadership effectiveness, extensive biographical details, go into great detail about the historical events or detail historical inaccuracies, or critique the film.
