Discussion 1: "Managing Conflict and Resistance?"

Please respond to the following:

• Watch the video from Karl McDonnell, CEO of Strayer University, titled "How do you determine when Organizational Change is necessary, and how do you prepare for employee resistance?" Explain what causes conflict in the workplace and propose how managers can work with employees to break down resistance to organizational change.

Please respond to class mate PamelaDemory (1-2 paragraphs)

There are many conflicts within an organization around a change. An organization must foreshadow any changes, as to give all employees enough time to process, deal, and accept the change good or bad. Also an organization like CEO, Karl Donnell stated must be transparent. One must share to the point of over sharing to ensure all available information is given to the employees and they feel they are not being left in the dark about something. There will always be that one employee who always thinks management knows more than they are sharing, and this approach helps to alleviate some of that. Also the organization would benefit from setting up working groups and change agents amongst the employees' peers. This help with buy in as one of their peers are representing them in matter with management, and the disseminating information is parallel across the organization. Lastly, as with life people mourn change. Giving personnel time to morn and accept the change helps not only the employee but also the organization. It allows for employees time to deal with the change themselves and come back to the organization ready to move forward. It also allows the organization a better view of the issues around the change that are upsetting their employees. Both can work to alleviate these issues to ensure a smoother change.

Please respond to class mate PamelaDemory (1-2 paragraphs)

Beyond the Job Design

Design of work has definitely has an impact on job satisfaction. Job satisfaction to some may be solely based on how comfortable they are, and their job makes them. Employees spend a lot of time at work and with the people they work with. So you must gain some sort of satisfaction, other than a paycheck, in order to endure these social interactions day in and day out. Is job satisfaction intrinsic, or extrinsic? Depending on the employee, job satisfaction can be both extrinsic, and intrinsic. For example some people have a knack for separating home life and work life and balancing both sepaeratly apart from one another. Where as another employee spends so much time at work with co-workers that that become their suto family, and the basis of most of their social interaction. It depends on the person and their personal motivations. However, allot of employees have personal friendships outside of work with their co-workers, making work, nothing more than work, but those personal interactions personal.

Hi Class and Professor,

My current employer is meeting the challenges of the non-traditional forces in the organization by keeping up with globalization. The company is moving everything from paper copies to electronic versions even health records. You can now verify health insurance instantly online while a patient checks in and scan any new documents right into their electronic health records. We have also merged with another large hospital and are able to view their records as well without violating Hippa or needing consents. All of our payments are handled electronically including checks. All of the daily processes are structured and laid out for every employee, so everyone comes in knowing what they are doing for the day. The organization I am currently employed with is a children's Institute that transforms the lives of children with disorders of the brain through research, education, and treatment. Leaders sustain the culture in the organization by applying the mission and values of everything we do. We hire the best clinicians, scientists, and staff to provide the best care and family support. We have now become an international resource for children in need. We have all of the same fundamentals as the Disney University. As leaders, we teach our staff to innovate, support, educate and entertain families from all over the world. I love working for my organization and would recommend it to anyone in the world

Please respond to class mate Dianne Gibbs (1-2 paragraphs)

Hello Professor and Classmates,

My biggest professional accomplishment is a combination of several things. As an eager teenager, I applied for my first job to be a cashier and never looked back. With each job, came new opportunities where I applied my past experience. Starting as a cashier and moving on to various jobs such as a telephone operator, hotel attendant to property manager in which all have led me to my current position.

Today, in my role as a legal assistant, I've worn many hats - serving as a personal manager, event coordinator, travel planner, staff liaison, client relationship builder and secretarial coordinator. I've navigated my way through corporate America and look forward to doing more once I've obtained my Bachelor of Business Administration.

Discussion 5: "Lessons learned"

Please respond to the following: (1-2 paragraphs)

• Watch the videos from Karl McDonnell, CEO of Strayer University, titled "What are some of the most important lessons you've learned in your professional career?" and "What advice do you have for our students who want to grow in their careers?" Discuss the most important lesson you've learned in your professional career and indicate how this lesson has helped to shape your career

Please respond to class mate RendagayeKulish (1-2 paragraphs)

Hi Class and Professor,

The most important lesson I have learned in my professional career is to LISTEN, not always to speak up. I have always been one to speak fast and constantly speak before listening to someone's entire statement. I was also always one to read some of a post and respond before reading it entirely. As I have grown and matured, I have learned that this attribute of mine has caused me to miss out on a lot of knowledge. If you just listen and/or read something entirely, you can gain so much from that other person or book. Since, practicing to remind myself to listen completely and then respond, I have progressed within my career. Not only professionally but educationally as well. I have climbed 4 steps on the ladder in 5 years. I am almost finally finished my bachelors and I seem to understand others even my children more.
