Assignment: Career Master Plan
This assignment will assess Competency : Apply concepts related to the role and departmental functions of health information.
DIRECTIONS: Create a mind map (a.k.a. brainstorming diagram) to outline your Career Master Plan. This plan will visually display not only your career goals and trajectory, but also the role that specific professional organizations, such as AHIMA and accrediting bodies like the Joint Commission will play in your career development. You'll be able to use this document as a guide through your education at NAU, and beyond!
Specifically, your mind map should describe:
•Your career goals (such as the type of position or job you want. ( My career choice HIM)
•Related health information functions/skills (such as imaging, coding, data management, department manager)
•Industry developments you'll need to pay attention to for continuing success in your career (such as new technology and the ICD-10 transition)
•The role that AHIMA and accrediting bodies (such as the Joint Commission) will play in shaping your career
•Your longterm career map (or outlook): What opportunities for advancement do you see after your entry-level position? What continuing education or certifications will you aim for?
To construct mind map, use symbols and shapes found in Microsoft Word. (If you aren't familiar with using symbols and shapes in Word, the NAU Online Library's Learning Express video tutorials can help, or you can view "Creating a Simple Flowchart in Microsoft Word," a YouTube video hosted by Floyd Jay Winters, for a very quick introduction.)
Alternatively, wish to use a web-based mind mapping tool such as Coggle or WiseMapping.
