Contrast archaeological survey and excavations

Assignment task:

Please answer the following questions using examples from Catalhoyuk and the readings for this week.

1. Compare and contrast archaeological survey and excavations. What do you think the goals of each are?

2. Who owns the past? In your answer reflect on what is meant by "the past" (is your idea of the past and the archaeological past the same thing?) Please be thoughtful in your reply and use your own experiences in addition to course materials.

3. Develop a table of the characteristics your book uses to talk about the categories: band, tribe, chiefdom, and states. Use examples from the text to discuss how anthropologists and archaeologists use categories. What are alternative ways of looking at social organization or political power? How are these categories helpful? How are the harmful?

4. List the different types of subsistence strategies discussed in this chapter. How have anthropologists and archaeologist developed theses categories? Define taxonomy then discuss the limitations of how these categories are used to discuss humans. What are the drawbacks to using these types of categories to define or classify human culture?
