Components of cognitive theory are automatic thoughts

Assignment:

Discussion

We will take a deeper look at Cognitive theory. While several theories of psychotherapy emphasize cognitive aspects of treatment, cognitive therapy is associated with the work of Aaron Beck. Through his work with patients, Beck developed the concept of automatic thoughts and their impact on an individual's daily functioning.

For the purposes of this discussion, you will need to access Psychotherapy.net from the MBU library. Select the "Counseling & Psychotherapy Theories in Context & Practice" videos. Once you open these videos, select Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and watch the video in its entirety.

After you have watched the video, answer the following questions:

1. Two of the primary components of Cognitive theory are Automatic Thoughts and Cognitive Distortions. Based on the video, what automatic thoughts did you observe? Provide a specific example. Which of the cognitive distortions (found on pages 283-284) did you observe? Provide a specific example. Did you find the counselors use of a multi-column worksheet helpful? Why or why not?

2. As a counselor-in-training watching this session, what is your personal reaction to Cognitive theory? Does the idea of an structured theory that relies on counselor driven directives make you comfortable or uncomfortable? Why?

In order to adequately complete this discussion assignment, you will need to watch the Cognitive theory video in full and properly cite it in your discussion post. You will also need to include citations from the course text in this week's post.
