This activity provides you the opportunity to research and analyze the alternatives for K-12 and post-secondary education and the implications for students.
Instructions
For this activity, you are going to consider the historical and contemporary perspectives on a college education.
Complete the following seven steps in order, using the spaces provided in this document. You will submit your completed College Education
Then And Now document to the College Education Then And Now Dropbox folder in the course (Step Six), and share your advertisement in the College Advertisement discussion forum (Step Seven).
Step One
First, review Conant's beliefs about college education in your textbook on pages 232-233 in the section "Who Merits a College Education."
In the space provided below, explain what Conant believed in 2-3 sentences.
Step Two
Read Michael Petrilli's article "Kid, I'm Sorry, but You're Just Not College Material" in Slate
In the space provided below, explain what Petrilli believes in 5-7 sentences. Include evidence from the text to support your response.
Step Three
Read the Harvard University Graduate School of Education's article "Pathways to Prosperity Launches"
In the space provided below, explain what what you have learned about the Pathways to Prosperity project in 2-3 sentences.
Step Four
Now, consider what you have read and what you personally believe about higher education and vocational options.
In the space provided below, answer the question, "Who should go on to college?" in 2-3 sentences.
Step Five
Lastly, design an advertisement that demonstrates how you feel about higher education.
Your audience for this advertisement is a hypothetical group of high school students.
Your advertisement should include visuals and support that demonstrate why you feel the way that you do. You must credit the sources of your materials.
You should design your advertisement as a separate Microsoft Word document, a Microsoft Powerpoint slide, or a standard graphic file format (eg. jpg, bmp, gif, png, etc.). The format must be one that your classmates and instructor can view without a special account or special software.
You will share this advertisement with your classmates in the College Advertisement discussion forum in Step Seven.
Step Six
Upload your completed College Education Then And Now document to the College Education Then And NowDropbox folder in the course.
Step Seven
Go to the College Advertisement discussion forum in the course. Create a new thread, and attach, insert, embed, or hyperlink to the advertisement that you created in Step Five.
Be sure to return to the College Advertisement forum in order to view your classmates' advertisements, and provide feedback.
