Company earned during the specific period

A Statement of Cash Flows is used to inform users of the financial statements how the the company generated cash and used the cash that was generated. However, why is this statement any more useful in determining what is available for the payment of dividends than the Profit and Loss Statement which indicates he amount of profit the company earned during the period?
