Civil engineering design civl 0017 - briefly explain how

Introduction

This is an assignment concentrated to tackle civil engineering problems and design solutions in groups and individually in a way which reflects as much as possible the environment in the industry. It helps students to provide adequate ability of analyzing and designing simple to complex structures in civil engineering area for students of Civil Engineering program. Students are exposed to the concepts, principles tools and techniques of analysis and design of structure right away from initial conceptual design to final construction implementation. This assessment also help students to write a technical report to address the design work implemented to clients, subcontractors etc. This design practice should investigate sustainability and safety considerations should be embodied in the design process.

Outcomes of the assignment

1. Demonstrate the basis of the engineering principles of a range of civil engineering disciplines such as structures, highways, Geotechnology and water engineering necessary to tackle problems and design solutions associated with multi-disciplinary design projects.

2. Apply those principles to realistic cases of sufficient complexity to require judgment in the selection of and application of appropriate design principles and material use.

3. Interpret design data in terms of the underlying engineering principles embodied in codes of practice.

4. In response to a relevant engineering problem, carry out calculations that lead to a solution, at the level expected within the profession of a new graduate engineer.

5. Present relevant information and calculations in a clear and unambiguous way.

Preliminary Study and Proposal of design project:

In the Part A of Group Design Project, Preliminary Study and Proposal of Design project submission to faculty approval, your group will be responsible to perform preliminary study including study of location, site investigation, and then come up complete planning and scheduling of how you are going to do this project to achieve assigned learning outcomes. Any changes suggested by the module leader will be included in further work progress in Part B.

Following are the expected tasks during completion of Part A:

1. During this phase, the group will prepare two pages to three page document supporting your idea and implementation. Students need to briefly explain how they are going to achieve this task with in due date. How they have divided the work with in group and what are the responsibilities assigned to individual students.

2. Type of building/project selected along with material usage, sustainability and aesthetics should be considered as part of evaluation.

Part B - Group Design Project (Sustainable building design and energy planning)

Eliminating CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels at buildings and at thermal electrical generation for building operations is a goal that is being embraced by the design professions throughout the world by the number of net-zero building design organizations. Further, the increasingly popular Passive House design strategy seeks to invest in the building's thermal envelope and electrical consuming systems up front to minimize thermal and electrical loads. To enable such energy and emission targets to be met requires all building design disciplines to work together in an Integrated Design Process to produce a cost- effective buildable design using Building-as-a-System principles. The students will work in teams of 3-4 to develop a durable high-performance envelope design considering sustainable design concepts. Once students have determined building's fundamental thermal and electrical loads by computer energy modeling, high-efficiency energy systems will be developed. Definitions of Net-Zero will be reviewed, specifically the difference between net-zero energy and net-zero carbon. To meet a NetZero carbon status for the project, either as an isolated project or as part of a community or neighborhood, renewable energy supply strategies at the site or off-site will be examined and defined. Capital and annual energy costs will be quantified to ensure a degree of practical precision to the NetZero analysis.

Options/choices for the projects can include:
- New or existing construction
- Study emphasis could vary, for example, focusing on emerging thermal envelope materials, innovative building- scale energy conversion systems, and economical design criteria.

Some of the things to be considered during the process are mentioned below:
Primary Discipline: X Building Materials X Building Science X Energy planning X Sustainable design X Structural design

Secondary Areas:
X Assessing Alternatives X Building Codes
X Building Science
X Computer Modeling/Drafting X Constructability
X Construction Management X Durability
X Energy Efficiency X New Technologies X Resilience
