Cinema as an visual experience

• 5-7 pages; double space; 12 pt. type; name in upper left hand corner of page; staple. THIS IS ONLY FORMAT NEEDED.

• Discuss one film we have seen or discussed in class in terms of at least one of the metaphors Elsaesser uses to explain cinematic perception.

• You may consider cinema as an visual experience (organized as window/frame, screen/threshold, mirror/face, look/gaze); as a haptic experience appealing to the sense of touch; as an acoustic experience activating the sense of hearing; or as an mental experience that dramatizes a state of mind. You may also consider the film a combination of these appeals to perception.

• Your paper should reflect your understanding of the way that perceptions are shaped in the cinema in order to excite our interest, stimulate our curiosity, engage our emotional involvement, activate our desires, provide pleasures and ultimately lead us to an interpretation of the film’s meaning.

• You MAY NOT use outside resources: books, reviews, films, websites, etc. to complete this assignment.
