A virtual visit is a useful tool to explore and research using the Internet. When you are assigned a virtual visit, you are graded on how you can find a useful newsworthy article and assemble a clear, though provoking opinion of that article so that it may be discussed in the class' open forum.
Instructions for a Virtual Visit: First, using the internet find an article relative to the assigned (usually broad) subject matter.
Then carefully read the article Then put the article away and write a summary of the article, remember to give details that you may use in a general discussion. Last write a summary or answer the assigned questions, INCLUDING YOUR OPINION of what you learned from the article and if you find the article relevant. What you are graded on: 2 pages/ 100 points Write at least a one-paragraph summary of the article. More if needed.
Last write a one page full opinion or answer to the questions from the article highlighting the strong points and the weaknesses in you opinion of the article. Last, Virtual visit must be TWO (or three) full Page of Word (.doc or docx), 12 point size, and traditional font. The ideas must fill the entire page and may only go beyond the parameter by a line or two.

The paper must be submitted the last day of class with your oral presentation Each virtual visit must be 2 pages in length (one summary of article and second your opinion) The Assignment: Negotiating in the school environment This course will explore crisis negotiation and deal with the very contemporary and relevant topic of adolescents who present a threat in a school environment by taking hostages or attempting to commit suicide. We will explore current school violence trends throughout the U.S. and the role law enforcement plays in mitigating future threats.
To better understand how negotiators must coordinate their efforts with first responders and tactical teams, you will receive an overview of the tactical response in a school environment with special emphasis on low- and mid-level threats. You will also learn how to work collaboratively with school officials when organizing a school response. Adolescents experience mental health issues unique to their emotional and sociological development and you will learn how these issues differ from those of an adult.
You will also gain a basic understanding of the psychological motivations of an adolescent in crisis and learn to recognize the characteristics of an emotionally disturbed youth. The personality disorders most commonly associated with teens as well as strategies for affecting a positive outcome during a crisis will be explained. A suicidal adolescent who makes a decision to commit suicide at school presents a risk to both peers and faculty.
You will learn to identify indicators of the immediacy of suicide intent as well as procedures for ensuring the safety of others. We will also discuss the psychological and sociological aspects of the "Classroom Avenger" with special emphasis on negotiation techniques. The course will culminate with one of the program's most challenging scenario-driven practical exercises allowing you to refine your negotiation team work as well as your own personal negotiation skills.
