Calculate the electron-repulsion energy

Consider the ground state Li+ ion (Z=3) in terms of the Bohr's model: two 1selectrons in the lowest allowed circular orbit around the nucleus.

1. Determine the ion total energy neglecting the electron-electron repulsion.

2. Place the electrons in such positions in the orbit that minimize their mutual repulsion and assume them to maintain their relative positions when moving. Determine the electron-repulsion energy.

3. Calculate the exact energy of the ion in terms of experimental ionization energies IE

4. Calculate the electron-repulsion energy from the experimental IE values (next lecture) and compare it with the value obtained in the 2. Comment on the actual effective distance between the electrons in the ion as compared to their separation in the orbit.
