If you have taken one of my other history courses, thank you for taking another, but please do not recycle old assignments. You need to do a new final project.

Research Essay: The purpose of the research paper is for the student to show they can research and write a history paper. After picking the topic for the research paper you must write a thesis statement then go on in your paper to defend it. I am not looking for a summary of history. I am looking at your research and how you have used it to defend your thesis.

You may choose a historical topic from the era of study in this course. To succeed with this essay the use of books (written by historians or scholars of history), and journal articles from the VU Library databases are required. The narrative part of the paper should answer the 5 W's of a historical essay; who (who was involved), what (what happened), where (where did it take place), when (when did it happen) and why (why did it happen). This essay will require a topic submission and an outline during the semester (See the Course Schedule for topic submission and outline due dates).

  • The essay should be at least 1500 word double-spaced pages not including bibliography page, with 1-inch margins, in Times New Roman 12 pt font.
  • You can put your name and the title in the header or you can use a cover page; the cover page does not count in length of essay.
  • At least four academic resources must be used: they include scholarly books or database journal articles, no more than one scholarly website may be used. Primary resources are encouraged. Encyclopedias and Wikipedia are not allowed.
  • In-line citations and a bibliography must be used.(See Read & Write for citation information).Papers submitted without citations (including page numbers) will receive a zero.
  • Introduction paragraph that includes a thesis statement, body that gives short summary of themes in chapters and closing paragraph that provides a ending summary a of paper and thesis.
  • Remember to judge peoples actions within the context of the culture, law, economics, moral codes, and religion of their time. In other words do not compare today's values and judgments to peoples of other periods in history.
  • Think about the 5 W's when analyzing these areas of history. Good historical writing is objective, analytical, and critical without bias and propaganda.
  • Your paper should be written in third person: Use words like "he", "she", "it", "they", but never "I","we", or "you"
