Assignment - Truss and Beam Modelling

For data please use the given expressions, where XYZ are the last three digits of your student number and R = 1.0 + 0.001 x (XYZ).

For example: if your student number is s3329123, then XYZ=123 and R=1.0+0.001 x (123)=1.123

For the canopy hook, shown in the figure, used to hold down an aircraft canopy, determine the maximum von Mises stress and the maximum deflection and based on your assessment, propose an improved and more optimal design. The hook is subjected to a concentrated upward load Fl as shown. Assume boundary conditions of fixed supports over the lower half of the inside hole diameter. The hook is made from AISI 4130 steel, quenched and tempered at 200°C. The hook thickness is Rx10 mm and F1= Rx100 kN. All dimensions are in millimetres.

1. Use ABAQUS CAE to analyse stresses and deformations under the shown load.

2. Model the plate and compare the performance, relevance and suitability of using:
a. plane stress elements (base research model),
b. shell elements

3. Use the plane stress model to determine the most appropriate element type, order, mesh density, etc. Utilize the resulting outcome in developing other models as relevant.

4. Validate the numerical results by comparing them with simplified theoretical solutions when relevant (e.g. cantilever beam bending of the top plate)

5. Analyse the base model and propose improvements by considering modifications of the topology/geometry, material, profile, etc

6. Compare the performances of your improved and optimised design and the base model design

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS

Prepare a professional report using the provided report template. In your report:

- Draw sketches for the FEM models that represent the frame economically. The sketches are required to show geometry, boundaries, loading, etc.,

- Describe the types of the finite elements that can be used to model the frames and discuss the techniques adopted in the simulation. Also explain the necessary options to save relevant data output and suppress unnecessary data output.

- Present the numerical results in a tabulated form. Also present, the deformed shapes.

- Provide a thorough discussion of the results.

- Compare the numerically calculated forces with those calculated theoretically for the statically-determinate truss (Part A). Theoretical calculations may be typed or inserted as scans of very neat hand sketches and hand-written calculations and should be included within the report file as an appendix.
