As part of your grade for discussion area assignments you

As part of your grade for discussion area assignments, you are required to make a substantive initial post and a comment on at least one of your fellow classmate's posts. A substantive initial post should be 250-300 words in length, display an understanding of the material, include references to relevant research, and use appropriate grammar and punctuation. A substantive comment on other posts should include an analysis of the post you are responding to (for completeness and accuracy) and suggestions, additions, or clarifications for improving the post. You will be graded based on the quality and length of your posts and responses.

  • Substantive responses shouldnot be based solely on opinion but should reflect the content of the reading assignment for the current lesson. It is also appropriate to include personal experience and/or research findings from outside sources that support the content from the assigned reading.
  • A substantive post to an online discussion forum must always be more than one sentence, contain new information and ask questions that will continue the discussion. Short statements like "I agree" or "good work" are not considered to be substantive.
  • Asking clarifying questions or stating something that will clarify or support a point brought out in the discussion are acceptable tactics in an academic discussion. Sometimes it is appropriate to challenge a thought or idea that has been presented, as long as the challenge is valid, supported by documented facts, and delivered in the spirit of collegiality.
  • All online postings should containproper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. It doesn't take any longer to do it right than it does to do it wrong and no matter how valid the content is, if it is spelled wrong or the grammar is incorrect, the reader will notice and possibly discount what he or she is reading.  Your work will be judged against standards of graduate-level work and employer expectations for professional communication.

Let me know if you have any questions.  I look forward to reading your responses and engaging in a lively discussion this week.
