Assignment: Teaching Methods

Different methods of teaching can be more or less effective depending on the learning outcomes being addressed. As educators, we rarely stick to one method of teaching as we know that course outcomes require many different methods of presentation and implementation for success by our students. Chapter Eleven in your text discusses the many different methods that can be used depending on the outcomes that are wished to be achieved. Pick three different methods and discuss the types of outcomes that would most likely be gained from each method of teaching.

Also answer the followin:

1) What is the purpose of the teacher, i.e. is it about facilitation leading students toward more critical literacy and socially and critically conscious, or is it about factual knowledge oriented toward job training? Or both, at the same time? Different methodological stances may or may not be appropriate to one's goals as an instructor.

2) Should we aim for more collaborative engagements or more independent achievement and should we compare students' leaning to one another, or to a standard of mastery? Here again, different methodological stances may or may not be appropriate to one's goals as an instructor.

3) Are we primarily oriented toward developmental learning or are we acting as gate-keepers who only award credentials based on successful performances regardless of developmental change?
