An automated real-time diagnostic system

An automated real-time diagnostic system designed to replace the cutting tool of a drilling machine at optimum times was designed by testing the system using a broad range of machining conditions. How many different machining conditions were possible if the variables were as follows:

  • Two workpiece materials (steel and cast iron)
  • Two drill sizes (0.125 and 0.25 inch)
  • Six drill speeds (1250, 1800, 2500, 3000, 3750, and 4000 revolutions per minute)
  • Seven feed rates (0.003, 0.005, 0.0065, 0.008, 0.009, 0.010, and 0.011 inches per revolution)
