Aligning staffing systems with organizational strategy

Task:

My organization where I work uses contingent workers. We have a difficult time retaining them and most need retraining. I work in the logistic transportation field.

This week you are analyzing how a firm can retrain, hire staff, or outsource to meet future demand. When there was a slump in the economy a few years back there were companies folding left and right. There were also larger companies downsizing and scrutinizing their existing staff. When these changes were occurring many suppliers and small businesses were following suit and making changes of their own only on a smaller scale.

The big three auto makers in Detroit were facing slow sales and the demand was low. GM had just launched their new pick-up truck and a couple of weeks later they had a press conference to notify the people that they were stopping production of that pick-up truck. They realized that their profits were slowing very quickly and their production was too much for their slow sales and growing inventory.

The organizational strategy allows businesses to take a look at what they have on their staff and try to cut back on extra time and employees who are not producing. Many of the larger companies hire on a contract so that when the work is completed so is the relationship between the worker. This also gives the organization freedom to hire on a full-time basis without providing benefits to the employee. When the organization decides to outsource their products or services they save money and in some instances obtain tax breaks.

More organizations will evaluate the costs of new technology so that the technology helps them right away rather than over time. When they gather the evidence to support their new technology they will compare with their current technology. Often times they find that the old equipment is so outdated compared to the new technology they will purchase that helps them to save money.
