Aim: Work with communities has a central place in contemporary human service practice. Each case study has been chosen to provide students with the opportunity to explore the knowledge and practical skills for connecting with people in local communities or communities of interest around opportunities and difficulties which they want to address. This can include developing local social and economic opportunities, addressing injustices, establishing dialogue between groups and building local capacity. Task: Students will choose one of the Case Studies offered in the course material. The task is to write an essay that critically analyses the community development practice approach explored in the chosen case study. Students will need to describe and to critically evaluate the work undertaken, the community development approach, the context, locality and the people involved in the work. Students will need to draw on community development theory and concepts, values and practice approaches to explore the case study. Students will need to explore the practice learnings from the case study and relevancy to their own community development practice framework. Criteria Mark Clear description of community context, locality and people involved 10 Clear summary of work undertaken and community development approach (i.e. what was done) 10 Analysis: ability to use community development theory, key concepts and approaches to evaluate strengths and areas needing improvement in the community development approach (i.e. why was the approach taken; was it appropriate; was it successful etc.)
