Administrative Management Workplace Visitation

In our recent ITAM Advisory Board meeting, the Board members encouraged the ITAM faculty to incorporate more interaction with businesses and workplace settings. Why? They cited these reasons:

  • to give students a glimpse into the real world of business and the workplace environment
  • to provide students with realistic expectations of what will be expected of them
  • to gain insights into real administrative and business problems
  • to add realism to the ITAM curriculum

Many of you taking this class are in the ITAM department.  The ITAM Department has five specializations:  (1) Network Administration, (2) Web and Database Administration, (3) Retail Management and Technology (4) CyberSecurity, and (5) Administrative Management plus corresponding minors in each specialization area, and an additional minor in Project Management.   Some of you are from difference majors such as Accounting, Economics, Communication, Law and Justice, Construction Management, and other university majors.

This final visitation project asks you to do what the Advisory Board has requested: visit a contemporary office, business, department, workplace setting, or similar business entity related directly to your major, minor, or personal interest.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this visitation, you will be able to...

  • observe and describe an workplace environment related to your major or minor field.
  • interview an administrative manager/supervisor and report your findings.
  • provide an analysis of and reaction to your visit.

Requirements:

1. You must interview a company with at least 25 employees. That does not mean the site you visit must have 25 employees. For example, if you are a Retail and Technology major and want to visit a Starbucks location, that specific location might not have 25 employees, but Starbucks does employ well over 25 people total!

2. If the interviewee does not know the answer or doesn't provide detail, make recommendations /provide discussion in your final paper-in other words, you are still responsible for answering every question.

Directions:

1. Get started early!  Don't wait until the last three weeks of class to start. Read the questions prior to selecting an organization so that you are selecting an organization and a person who can answer all these questions!

2. Schedule a visit to a business, department, office, or similar workplace setting related directly to your major, minor or personal interest.

3. Complete 5 sections in the Visitation Questionnaire in addition to the Career Advice sections during your scheduled visit.

Memo Headings:

Your first paragraph (introduction) does not have a heading. In your first paragraph, describe the company you visited. Essentially in the first paragraph you will answer questions 1-6 of the Visitation Questionnaire. After that introductory paragraph, use the following headings (these depend upon the 5 areas of interest you chose for your interview - so only use the 5 areas you chose:

  • Management Career Paths
  • Management Theories
  • Effective Supervision
  • Leadership Essentials
  • Planning, Goal Setting, and Achieving Results
  • Staffing Essentials
  • Setting Up Employees for Success
  • Appraising and Rewarding Performance
  • Project Management
  • Paper and Electronic Records Management
  • Career Advice
