Abortion and capital punishment

ABORTION AND CAPITAL PUNISHMENT:

PRACTICING SUMMARIZING AND WRITING ARGUMENTS:

Follow the instructions below. Use our reading assignments and course materials when developing your work.

For this assignment, we will be practicing summarizing others’ arguments and writing our own. We will be reading many arguments about applied-ethics topics in upcoming modules, and we should refine our skills in analyzing and assessing an author’s point of view as well as providing our perspectives. For our practice, we will use information about abortion and capital punishment, the two ethical subjects that students in this course have often expressed the most interest in learning about. We’ll take a look at both historically influential and new arguments on these two issues.

(1) please construct a summary of one of the arguments of:

Louis Pojman, Deterrence and the Death Penalty (See uploaded file)

(2) write your own argument in response to at least one of the questions about abortion and capital punishment included in this module.

For example, you could write a summary of Nie’s essay about coerced abortion in China (like I did—but don’t use mine), and then present an argument about the three-part lethal injection method that has been in use in the United States. See our required materials for examples of argument summaries.
