Assignment 1 (Focus: Chapter 2, Scaling and Scales of Measurements)

A small portion of every assignment will be completed using SPSS (version 21) that is available in every computer lab at Marymount California University.  You will need to download the associated .SAV file (SPSS data file) that has the same assignment number.  For example, Assignment #1 will have "Assignment1" in the .SAV file name (e.g., "Assignment1_Data.sav").

Question 1. This type of scale consists of a set of categories that have different names and that there are no quantitative distinctions between observations.

Question 2. This type of scale consists of ordered categories that are all intervals of exactly the same size.  In addition, equal differences between numbers on this scale reflect equal differences in magnitude and the zero value of this scale does not indicate a zero amount of the variable being measured.

Question 3. This scale consists of set of categories that are organized in an ordered sequence (typically based on size or magnitude).

Questions 4-7. Special Instructions: Match type of variable on the left column with the type of scale of measurement on the right column by writing the variable's number in the blank (e.g., "Ages in Years" would be 1).  Each matched response is worth the value of a typical question.

Question 8. What additional information is obtained by measuring two individuals on an interval scale compared to an ordinal scale?  In other words, what additional information can be gained by using the interval scale over the ordinal scale?

Question 9. If it is impossible to divide the existing categories of a variable, then it is an example of a(n) ____ variable (hint: type of variable not scaling).  In other words, there are no meaningful values in between two adjacent categories.

Question 10. This terminology describes a set of individuals selected from a population, usually intended to represent the population in a research study.

Assignment 2 (Focus: Chapter 3, Frequency Distribution)-

A small portion of every assignment will be completed using SPSS (version 21) that is available in every computer lab at Marymount California University.  You will need to download the associated .SAV file (SPSS data file) that has the same assignment number.  For example, Assignment #1 will have "Assignment1" in the .SAV file name (e.g., "Assignment1_Data_Set.sav").
