State conditions for the validity of the following assertion: if N ships are distributed at random over a region of the ocean of area A, and if a plane can search over Q square miles of ocean per hour of flight, then the number of ships sighted by a plane in a flight of T hours obeys a Poisson probability law with parameter λ = NQT/A.
