A beam is loaded and supported as shown in Figure 2. The cross-section of the beam is also shown in Figure 1.

1· Draw neatly the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam.

2· Find the locations of maximum shear and bending moment in the beam

3· Find the centroid of the cross-section and the location of horizontal neutral axis (NA)

4· Find the 2nd moment of area of the cross-section about NA

5· Calculate the maximum bending/flexural stress in the beam

6· Draw neatly the variation of flexural stress along the cross-section of the beam at maximum bending moment location. Identify the compression and tension in the face of the beam.

7· If the allowable bending stress is 150 MPa, find the factor of safety and comment on the safety of the beam design.

8· If the beam is not safe, what design steps should be taken to make the beam safe? Does the design process needs trial and error (iterations)

9· Explain the limitations of flexural stress formula

10· State the basic differences between flexure and torsion formulas
