Assignment Brief:

Complete an individual Game Design Criticism. You will evaluate a traditional game (i.e. not a Video Game) from many perspectives. You cannot select Monopoly, however, you may use your previous evaluations as inspiration for this work. Please note, this is not a journalistic appraisal of the game. This is an academic evaluation of a non-computer game. It is important to include your own personal experience in your analysis.

You will:

1. Justify and defend the selection of a traditional game for your personal game design criticism.

2. Describe the game in general terms from your own understandings.

3. Identify the genre(s) of the game.

4. Analyseeach component of the game mechanics and context, including:
o The goal(s) of the game.
o The rule(s) of the game.
o The premise of the game.
o And other components covered in class.

5. Analyse the meaning, referentiality and socio-cultural layers of the game.

6. Evaluate the visual representation of the game, justify and defend your evaluation.

7. Choose andEvaluate 3 game balancing aspects and its appropriateness or otherwise, from your personal perspective, justify and defend your evaluation. The possible aspects are
o Fair/Unfair, including loop holes
o Skill/(Chance or Random)
o Short/Long, including dead ends/stalemate
o Fun/Otherwise
o Forgiving/Otherwise

8. Discover from your evaluations ideas, for future use in your own game projects.
