Association rules states the likelihood of co-occurrence of events or features in records in a database (example: when a patient has characteristics A and B, he or she has an 80 percentage chance of containing characteristic C). Data-mining software can automatically recognize associations in big data sets. Though many associations are trivial, some point out causative or "common cause" relationships.
