The update statistics command assists the server in making the best decisions regarding which indexes to use whenever it processes a query, by giving information regarding the distribution of the key values in indexes. The update statistics commands make statistics, if there are no statistics for a specific column or replace the existing statistics if they already exist. The statistics are stored in system table’s systabstats and sysstatistics.
