The substance which stimulates the production of red blood cells through bone marrow is erythropoietin. The Erythropoietin is a hormone secreted by kidneys. Its secretion is raised when there is scarce tissue oxygenation (that is, tissue hypoxia) caused either by decreased oxygen availability (as it takes place in high altitudes) or by internal diseases, as in the pulmonary diseases.
