Though this is not a rule, to be efficient fecundation in common should occur within around 24 hours after ovulation (that happens around the 14th day of menstrual cycle).  Fecundation can happen even if copulation took place up to 3 days before ovulation because the male gametes stay viable for around 72 hours within the female reproductive system. The fertile phase of the women however is considered the phase from 7 days before ovulation to 7 days after ovulation.
