Switched backbone: In this type of network a router is replaced by switch and that router is reconfigured to support the traffic from the WAN

VLAN: In Virtual LAN architecture intelligent and high speed switches and computers are assigned to LAN segments by software rather than hardware.

The best practices backbone design today is VLAN because of its advantages like:

• Ease of administration
• Reduction in network traffic
• Confinement of broadcast domains 
• Better security and network reliability
