Register are electromechanical device this has the capacity to store only 8 bits. Each contains eight locations. Each location holds one bit either 0 or1. There are seven general purpose registers Accumulator, B, C, D, E, H, L. We can also store 16 bits along with register pairs BC,DE, HL.
