The stem can be covered by the epidermis (having cuticle, stomata and photosynthetic cells) as in the monocots or, the epidermis is replaced by the periderm (phellogen, phelloderm and cork) as in the dicots and gymnosperms. The leaves are generally covered by the epidermis.
