In metagenesis some coelenterates, such as Obelia and Aurelia, there is alternation among medusoid and polypoid forms. The polyps reproduce asexually originating medusae which then release gametes.

The female and male gametes unite beneath water to form the zygote which then develops into larva and afterward originates the other polyp. The form which reproduces asexually is the polyp. Polyps give birth to medusae through budding in Obelia and by strobilization in the Aurelia.
