Hemoglobin is the molecule which is made up of four polypeptide chains, each bound to the iron-containing molecular group known as the “heme” group. Thus, the molecule consists of four polypeptide chains and four heme groups. As a protein, it is composed of association of polypeptide chains; functionality of the hemoglobin depends on the integrity of its quaternary structure.
