Metagenesis of Obelia and Aurelia
In metagenesis of Obelia and Aurelia what is the form which produces gametes? What is the form which replicates asexually?
Expert
In metagenesis of some coelenterates, like Obelia and Aurelia, there is alternation between medusoid and polypoid forms. The polyps reproduce asexually originating medusae that then release gametes. The female and male gametes fuse under water to form zygote that then develops in later and larva originates another polyp.
The form which reproduces asexually is polyp. Polyps give birth to medusae through budding in Obelia and by strobilization in the Aurelia.
