Meiosis and mitosis according to biological function
Regarding their biological function what is the basic difference between meiosis and mitosis?
Expert
The major biological function of mitosis is cellular multiplication, a basic process for the growth and development of multicellular organisms, asexual reproduction, tissue renewing and so on.
Biological function of the meiosis is gamete formation (that is, in gametic meiosis) or spore formation (that is, in sporic meiosis), that is, the production of cells qualified for sexual reproduction with half of the quantity of chromosomes as compared to the original cell.
There is a special kind of meiosis which occurs in zygotes of some algae, fungi and protozoans. This meiosis termed as zygotic meiosis, has the function of decreasing to a half the number of chromosomes of adult individuals which will be formed from the zygote. In the species with zygotic meiosis, adult individuals are haploid and they make gametes by mitosis. Such gametes fuse in pairs with others and produce a diploid zygote which, then, undergoes meiosis to restitute the common ploidy of adult individuals.
