The vector mosquito bites the contaminated person and ingests male and female gametocytes of parasite. In the insect gut the gametocytes discriminate in gametes and fecundation happens, forming zygotes.

Each plasmodium zygote by mitosis (sporogony) creates various infective sporozoites that migrate to salivary glands of mosquito. When the mosquito bites a person sporozoites enter the human circulation and when in liver they undergo the primary asexual reproduction (tissue schizogony), releasing various merozoites in the blood. The merozoites infect red blood cells where the second asexual reproduction of cycle (erythrocytic schizogony) and the production of many other parasites take place; some of these parasites differentiate in gametocytes. The red blood cells then break (hemolysis), parasites are released in te blood and the cycle can resurrect.
