Type 1 drivers offer a bridge between ODBC and java. Type’s 2-4 drivers are written completely in Java; however differ as to how they connect to the DBMS. Type 2 drivers mainly rely on the DBMS product for inter-machine communication, when any. Type 3 drivers mainly translate JDBC calls into a DBMS-independent network protocol.
