EDFA stands for Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier. It is a device which boosts the signal in an optical fiber. EDFA is the optical repeater device which is used to increase the intensity of the optical signals being carried via a fiber optic communications system. The optical fiber is doped with the rare earth element erbium in such a way that the glass fiber can absorb light at one frequency and emit light at other frequency. The external semiconductor laser couples light to the fiber at infrared wavelengths of either 980 or 1480 nanometers. This action stimulates the erbium atoms.
