IC engines are internal combustion engines. The fuel combustion takes place within the combustion chamber. Examples: Trucks, cars, two wheelers etc.

IC engines are classified due to following factors:

a) According to the type of fuel used

•  Petrol engine
•  Diesel engine
•  Gas engine

b) According to the cooling system

• Air cooled engine
• Water cooled engine

c) According to the cycle of operation

• Otto cycle
• Diesel cycle
• Dual combustion cycle

d) According to the number of cylinder

•  Single cylinder
•  Multi cylinder engine.

e) According to the number of strokes

•  Two stroke
•   Four stroke
