The kidneys and hormones which act on them are the main physiological regulators of the net blood volume of the body. Since more water is resorbed in the nephron tubules, the more the blood volume rises; as more water is excreted in urine the more the blood volume decreases.

Blood volume in its turn has a direct relation to blood pressure. The blood pressure rises whenever the blood volume raises and it lowers whenever the blood volume lowers. That is the cause why one of the major groups of antihypertensive drugs is diuretics.

Doctors frequently prescribe diuretics for the hypertensive patients to excrete more water and therefore lower their blood pressure.
