The working of the hypophysis is altered at the time of pregnancy. Because estrogen and progesterone levels reside elevated during the gestational phase the generation of GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) from hypothalamus is prevented. The shortage of GnRH thus prevents the secretion of LH and FSH from hypophysis and another menstrual cycle doesn’t begin. If pregnancy doesn’t occur the lowering of progesterone and estrogen levels stimulates the generation of GnRH by the hypothalamus. This hormone then rushes the adenohypophyseal secretion of LH and FHS which in their turn stimulate the maturation of follicles and beginning of another menstrual cycle.
