The epithelium of airway is a ciliated epithelium and consists of mucus-secreting specialized cells. The secreted mucus encloses the interior wall of the airway retaining organisms and foreign particles which then are swept by the cilia of epithelium.
In mucous ciliated epithelium of the airway there is as well intense activity of the immune system with antibodies and leukocytes destroying and inactivating foreign agents.
Other defense methods of the airway are the cough and sneeze. They help in the removal of solid and semi fluid particles such as pathologic residuals (or sputum) and accidentally aspired objects.
