The neurohypophysis releases oxytocin and the antidiuretic hormone (ADH). Oxytocin is liberated in the women during delivery in order to improve the strength and frequency of uterine contractions and hence, to help the baby’s birth. During the lactation period, the infant’s sucking action over the mother’s nipples stimulates the generation of the oxytocin which then raises the liberation of the milk by the mammary glands. Vasopressin, or ADH, participates in the regulation of water of the body and hence, in the control of blood pressure as it enables the reabsorption of free water through the renal tubules. Since, water goes back to the circulation the volume of the blood increases.
