Thus far, you have read about the benefits of, theoretical support for, and strategies used in literary response. You might be left wondering, “What specifically must students respond to?”  This is a significant question that warrants attention. Teachers always offer a model for response and usually facilitate response strategies so that they are focused and anchored in the literature. There are five distinct avenues to which response should be guided:

1.  Theme 
2.  Plot 
3.  Genre 
4.  Curriculum integration 
5.  Craft
