Separation of the homologous chromosomes in the meiosis I has two major functions which are illustrated: to diminish down to a half the sum total number of chromosomes, generating or producing haploid daughter cells at the ending of the process, and to initiate genetic recombination because the separation is aleatory, that is, each pair of daughter cells can be dissimilar from the other pair which relating chromosomal combination from paternal as well as maternal origins. (And when crossing over is considered each of four resultant cells can be diverse from others.)

The separation or division of identical chromatids in the meiosis II has the similar function it has in the mitosis: to separate or divide the chromosomes already reproduced to daughter cells.
