The functional (filtering) unit of kidneys is the nephron. The nephron is made up of efferent arteriole, bowman's capsule, afferent arteriole, glomerulus, proximal tubule, loop of Henle, distal tubule and the collecting duct. In each kidney there exist about one million nephrons.
