Certain enzymes require other related molecules to work. Such molecules are termed as enzyme cofactors and they can be, for illustration, organic ions, similar to mineral salts, or organic molecules.

Inactive enzymes for not being bound to their cofactors are termed as apo-enzymes. Active enzymes bound to their cofactors are termed as holo-enzymes.
