Is there exchange of cells among the mother and the fetus via the placenta?

Under common conditions, there is no passage of cells across the placenta throughout gestation. The placenta has a flat mucosa splitting the richly vascularized area in contact with the mother’s endometrium from umbilical cord in contact with the fetal blood. This blockade is termed as placental barrier. Though permeable to certain substances (that is, selective permeability), the placental blockade forbids the passage of cells.
