While Metal Inert Gas (or MIG) and Tungsten Inert Gas (or TIG) is both shielded arc welding applications, they are extremely dissimilar from one another. MIG welds are formed with a consumable electrode, whereas TIG welds are formed with a non-consumable electrode. TIG welding usually consists of filler metal also.
MIG and TIG arc welding can both be automated. But, TIG is a further obscured procedure so the equipment is pricier and not easy to set.
